Healthier Cranberry Sauce
Why It Works
Cranberries have incredible antioxidant power, and they don’t need cups of refined sugar (or a can-like shape) to taste good. When you let the cranberries shine by sweetening them just enough, you get something tart, fresh, and nutrient‑dense — perfect for bowls, holiday plates, or leftover sandwiches. This version is clean, simple, and naturally sweetened. I might be biased, but I think that putting this on the holiday table has the potential to elevate the whole meal.
Maple syrup or agave give you sweetness without the crash and keep the flavor bright. If you want it even lower‑sugar, you can cut the sweetener in half. I do not recommend artificial sweeteners.
Ingredients
12 oz fresh or frozen cranberries
¼ cup maple syrup or agave (adjust to taste)
½ cup water
Zest of 1 orange
Juice of ½ orange
½ tsp vanilla extract
Pinch of salt
Instructions
Add cranberries, water, orange juice, and sweetener to a saucepan. Bring to a simmer and cook 8–10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the berries burst and the sauce thickens. Stir in orange zest, vanilla, and a pinch of salt. Taste and adjust sweetness. Let cool — it thickens more as it sits.
