Why it works
I wasn’t originally planning to include any smoothie recipes, because I feel that they’re kind of boring. However, a smoothie is a great way to check several nutrition boxes at once, and to get nutrients into kids who may be resistant to other healthy foods. This recipe uses simple ingredients that you might already have on hand, and is kid-tested and approved multiple times over.
Soy milk adds complete protein, cocoa provides iron, and peanut butter adds more protein plus healthy fats for sustained energy. Feel free to add a couple handfuls of spinach for a boost - it changes the color a bit, but the flavor is still on point.
INGREDIENTS
1 cup unsweetened soy milk
1 frozen banana
1 tbsp cocoa powder
1 tbsp peanut butter
1 tbsp chia seeds
1 tbsp maple syrup (optional)
Pinch of salt
INSTRUCTIONS
Blend all ingredients until smooth.
Serve chilled.
